Rebekah Vollintine Sampler

Rebekah Vollintine was born in 1730 in Essex County, Massachusetts. This work is undated but was probably executed around 1740. Rebekah's color palette, bird-topped trees and the sawtooth border appear in other Massachusetts samplers of the time. The initials "LC" most likely refer to Rebekah's instructress.

The model was worked with one strand of Needlepoint, Inc., silk on 32 count Amber linen from Wichelt. The stitch count is 102 x 167, and on 32 count linen the finished size is approximately 6 1/4 x 10 inches. Most of the sampler is worked in cross stitch, but there are areas of satin stitch, Algerian eye stitch, cross stitch over one thread, and straight stitch.
