Sarah Munday Sampler

Sarah Munday completed her busy sampler May 2, 1812. Stitched on a 45/55 count linen, the original sampler measures 12 1/2 x 13 inches.

The beginning of her sampler was a double alphabet with the "J" omitted, followed by a quote from Ecclesiastes 12:1. She ran out of room and left the "h" out of youth.

The spacing of words in the Lord's Prayer is not consistent. Her W's are very unusual, starting out to look like an "n" and ending up as a "W."

In the bottom half of her sampler she has stitched 17 birds, 6 children, 2 houses, and many baskets and trees. The sampler is stitched in mostly cross stitch, with satin stitch houses and some freehand. The solid bands are both done in cross stitch.

The design was reproduced and stitched by Edna Medlin, on 40 count sandstone linen from Wichelt, with silk.

The Stitch count is 335 by 291. On 40 count linen the design is 16 3/4 by 14 1/2 inches.
