This English sampler was stitched by seven year old Margaret Walker in 1786. Much of the education of young girls came from stitching their samplers. There is a lot to be learned from the verse chosen by Margaret.
A child to learn the hardest thing. The varied flower border and the central urn add to the beauty of her needlework. Our sampler was stitched on 40 count Sandstone from Wichelt, using silk threads. After stitching, the sampler was hand dyed with walnut shells to give it the look of the original sampler. Our model was stitched by Edna Medlin of Threads of Gold. The stitch count is 132 by 258. On 40 count linen, the design size is approximately 6 5/8 by 13 inches.
