Margaret Jackson, 1806 Sampler

This very unusual sampler (probably American) was purchased from a Maine antique dealer. Adam and Eve are depicted on either side of the Tree of Knowledge, below a beautifully worked satin stitch sky. Angel, moon and stars all shine from the sky. Many of the motifs are stitched using free form leaves and flowers.

The unusual verse reads:

Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches: feed me with food convenient for me: lest I be full and deny thee, and say, who is the Lord? Or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

The sampler, reproduced and stitched by Jennet Whiteside, is stitched on 35 count hand dyed linen from The Scarlet Letter with silk threads by Kreinik.

Stitch count is 231 x 269. On 35 count linen, the piece measures 13 x 15 1/2 inches.
