In days gone by, woman fashioned pincushions from chipped or broken oil lamps and candlesticks, showing great thrift and creativity. Here are two designs adapted from antique samplers, transformed into pincushions, and trimmed with findings from local drapery shops.
The pincushions were designed and stitched by Candi Smith and are part of part of the Threads of Gold Garden Collection. If fabric and floss are not available from your local shop, they can be ordered from Em-li's. Search your local flea markets and antique shops for suitable candlesticks and lamps. The floral motif is stitched on 32 count Barn Owl linen from Birds of a Feather. Stitch count is 29 by 45. The alphabet and floral arch is stitched on 36 count Sparrow linen, also from Birds of a Feather. Stitch count is 31 by 54. Both designs are stitched over two threads with two strands of Weeks Dye Works' floss. Chart: $6.00 |
