Jean Rattray 1761 Sampler

This early Scottish Sampler, stitched in bright red colors, has an arcaded border found most often on Scottish samplers. Adam and Eve are standing under what appears to be an apple tree. Each are holding fruit from that tree. The tree next to Adam and Eve has the look of the Tree of Life often shown in samplers. Birds, trees, animals, and urns complete this busy sampler.

The model was reproduced and stitched by Jennett Whiteside of Threads of gold. It was stitched with au Ver a Soie silk thread on 36 count Summer Khaki linen, and then antiqued using a walnut dye.

Stitch Count: 210 by 258. Size on 36 count linen: 11 2/3 by 13 1/3 inches.

Chart:  $13.00
