English Band Sampler c. 1700

This sampler is neither signed nor dated, but because of its Holbein or double-running-stitch bands, it is believed to have been stitched in the early 1700's.

We have no idea of the age of the stitcher, but it is noteworthy that the bands become progressively more sophisticated as they progress down the sampler. This suggests that the stitcher became more accomplished as she worked. The original sampler was worked on very fine linen over 3 threads. Our model is stitched on 32 count linen over the usual 2 threads.

Our model is stitched on 32 count Lambswool from Wichelt.

Stitch Count is 128 by 277. Design size on 32 count linen - 8 by 17 1/4 inches.

Reproduced and stitched by Jennett Whiteside.

Floss required: Au Ver a Soie 516, 1713, 2124, 2235, 3833, 4612, and 5055, and Needlepoint, Inc. 203. DMC conversion is also provided.
