Ann Eliza Trites 1834

This is an American sampler stitched by Ann Eliza when she was 11 years old. She lived in Kinsessing Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Based on several elements of the sampler…the central oval wreath, repeated motifs, and the use of randomly placed initials of family members…it is probable that this sampler was worked at one of the various Friends (Quaker) girls' schools in the Philadelphia area. We have included a family history which was taped to the back of the original sampler.

Colors are typical subdued shades of blue-greens and peaches. The sampler uses mainly cross stitch over one and two threads, queen stitch, and satin stitch.

The model was reproduced and stitched by Jennett Whiteside of Threads of Gold, using 32 count vintage linen from Wichelt, and silk threads. The Stitch count is 270 wide by 209 high. On 32 count linen the design is 16 1/4 by 12 3/4 inches.
