Although this sampler maker does not give her name, she uses many initials which are more than likely members of her family. The year in which she worked her sampler and several initials are found in the fifth band, following several alphabets. The middle three bands contain an embellished Scottish alphabet. Following this alphabet is a band of crowns with initials above them, and a beautiful arcaded band. Most unusual about this sampler are the muted colors. As found in most 18th century samplers, the sampler maker divides her sampler into bands and makes use of a variety of stitches, including cross stitch, back stitch, Montenegrin stitch, long arm cross stitch, four sided stitch, and Algerian eye stitch. Our model was stitched on 35 count Glenshee linen using silk floss. It was reproduced and stitched by Jennett Whiteside. The stitch count is 146 by 249. On 32 count linen, the design is 9 by 15 1/2 inches; on 35 count it is 8 by 14 inches. Floss required: Au ver a soie: 1844, 1736, 2225, 1745, and 411; Needlepoint, Inc. 124, 223, and 123. DMC equivalents are also provided. Chart: $12.00 |
